E-Mail
marketing programs are the "high tech" equivalent of direct mail. They
put your message into the hands (really on the computer screens) of
your target audience. Your e-mail message should be interesting,
useful and fun. By creating a compelling message and sending it
regularly to your target audience, you stimulate sales and interest in
your business. You can use e-mail marketing programs to:
- Present special
offers or pricing
- Provide useful,
unique information
- Tickle customers to
go to your website
- Introduce new
products or services
- Lighten the mood
with jokes or entertainment related to your business
- Encourage your
recipients to "refer a friend" (called viral marketing)
Types of E-Mail
Marketing
There are two main
types of e-mail marketing programs: opt-out and opt-in.
"Opt-Out" marketing is
designed very much like direct mail. In this type of program, you send
your e-mail message to a large audience using an e-mail list obtained
from an outside source or from your historical records. The client
didn't ask for the information, but you give them the option to
opt-out of your mailing list.
"Opt-In" marketing
involves using an e-mail list from people who request (i.e. opt-in) to
be on your mailing list. These requests usually come from your website
or can be requested off-line.
